I joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1997 while I attended Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. At first, it was a way to pay for college and reduce my student loan debt. But what started out as a means to an end turned into a passion that continues today.
Upon returning from basic training, I joined the Southern University ROTC program and in May 2001 was commissioned a second lieutenant.
Since then, I have been stationed or performed temporary duty in North Dakota, Wisconsin, Georgia, Washington, Kansas and Kentucky. I have also been stationed overseas in Korea and deployed to Kuwait and Iraq.
As a Louisiana native, I felt compelled to write this article not to brag but to inform. The military has opened my eyes and broadened my experiences to a degree that I do not think I would have received if I had remained in Baton Rouge or in my hometown of Lafayette.
Now, I am not trying to recruit, but simply share my experiences in order to give you something to think about. Military service is not for everyone, but neither is college.
