In his State of the State Address, Governor Pat Quinn made the issue of hiring veterans a priority.
“We will provide a significant tax credit for every unemployed veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan that a company hires,” Quinn told the legislature during his address.
If passed, companies would be eligible for a 5,000 dollar tax credit if they hire a veteran this year.
“I’m very excited about that because I’m in the process myself of trying to get another job, James Harris, a veteran of the Army, told KWQC.
Currently, companies are eligible for a 1,200 dollar tax credit and the increase would, in theory, not cost the state that much.
According to the Department of Revenue, only 95 individuals took advantage of the incentive last year - costing the state less than 90,000 dollars.
The Rock Island Veterans Assistance Commission tells KWQC so few take advantage of the program because they do not know it exists.
