After nearly 49 years, depot employee, 73, still loves his job

On Nov. 22, 1963, Bob Cays of Reeders sat in a barber’s chair getting a new haircut for a new job he landed at a 10-year-old military facility.

Normally, that might be the kind of date from 50 years ago you’d forget, but not that one, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Cays was in that chair when he found out.

The date is unforgettable, and so was the job Cays was starting the following week. Especially since he’s still there as one of the longest-tenured employees at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

“I wanted a new haircut to look sharp for my new job,” said Cays, 73.

Almost 49 years later, Cays is still at the depot. That’s about half as long as the depot has been around, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Though he hasn’t been there the entire time, he’s seen his share of changes.

He was one of about 2,500 employees when he started — now he’s one of about 5,500.

He’s an information technologies specialist, a job title that barely existed two decades ago, let alone in the 1960s.

The upgrades are the biggest story, as the massive property continues to add buildings and facilities.

“All of the change has been for the better,” he said. “The lights, the equipment, they weren’t very good back then. Now they’re very good.”

Cays left the Army in the early ‘60s and got ready to start his career as a television repairman at Megargel’s Radio and Electric on Main Street in Stroudsburg.
